Someone ones came up with the idea of opening up a continental cafe in England and it would be a good place to hang around, this was back in the nineteen sixties but the only problem was that the takings were so very small.

Fast forward to the nineties, some one has a brilliant idea to start chains of coffee shops all over the place selling mocha, latte and cappuccino at premium prices and the whole economics is transformed. You cannot imagine any mall or shopping centers without any of the major coffee shop chains.

Why does it work? People have always needed a place to meet friends and discussions. There was a time when bars or pubs were the places but some people prefer an alcohol free environment so bars will not do.

For women it must be daunting to enter a pub on their own because they can be places to pick up someone. Often sports bars will be full of loud sports fans.

You can go in one of the coffee places to read the newspaper, or just sit back and read a book. One of the main marketing ploys is that you are not made to feel you are being hurried to finish drinking.

Although I think that coffee shops are the most expensive shops anywhere, simply because it costs them on 10 cents to produce the coffee but you will not be charged that. But whatever you get charged you will feel wow, why are you not charging me more?

Well finally in Anglo Saxon culture you have a cafe society just like in France and in the Middle East, it is better than a booze culture. But really it is a triumph for interior design because that is what you are paying for.
